How can I Volunteer?

To volunteer with us, you can choose to be either a session volunteer, or a board member (or both!).

To be a session volunteer, you don’t need to be a qualified youth leader to be a volunteer, and you don’t need to have had any youth work experience either. We are looking for people who are able to nurture, encourage and talk to our young people. It's up to you as to how much involvement you would like to have during sessions. Below are some examples of ways in which you can get involved with our sessions.

Host - Hosts are simply responsible for making young people feel welcome and wanted at the Hut. They need to be friendly, willing to listen without judgement and able to make drinks, toast and put biscuits on a plate.

Helper - Helpers help to run sessions and activities with the young people by supporting the session leader, taking responsibility for directing and supporting the young people and generally getting involved in a pro-active way.

Session Leader - The Session Leader is the person who oversees the session and activities with the young people, taking responsibility for their team of volunteers and being ‘in charge’.

By signing up to be a volunteer, you don't have to fully commit to one of the above roles every time you attend a session. Each volunteer is able to discuss their role at a session with our Youth Worker. Some weeks you may be happy to lead a session, whereas other weeks you may just want to be responsible for one of the activities, or alternatively, just be a pair of eyes and ears to support our young people as and when they need it.

If you decide to volunteer with us, we will support you with the training you need to feel confident to volunteer at our sessions. Before every session we have a team briefing, this allows all volunteers and staff to ask any questions, and for the Youth Worker to delegate any tasks for the evening. This is also a good opportunity to discuss which role you would like to fulfil that night. We also have a team briefing at the end of every session, this gives us a chance to reflect on how the session went, and to discuss any issues that may have occurred.
